    Datel WiFi MAX Review
    Reviewer: Gerry Block

Six years ago, online gaming was pretty much the exclusive realm of the PC. Fortunately, it wasn't long before consoles jumped on board, and now even handhelds can mix it up online. The only problem with the portable systems is the fact that getting the PSP and DS on the internets isn't quite as easy as just jacking an Ethernet cable into a hole. Wireless is the name of the game, and while many have their own wireless networks at home, there are a fair number of people who aren't into dealing with an extra box and the setup associated with getting a router up and running.

Fortunately, Datel is out to get even the least computer savvy among us online, and their WiFi MAX USB WiFi dongle will do just that. The small dongle is essentially an 802.11g WiFi card/access point. Simply put, if your computer has an internet connection, the WiFi MAX will act just like a wireless router when you plug it in, allowing your PSP or DS to go online, all without the hassle of setting up a dedicated router.
Installation is a rather painless process. Datel's software offers clear choices between PSP and DS setups, and in our tests, required no manual settings tweaks before our PSP was up and running on the net. For those willing to go a bit deeper than the standard pre-sets, the WiFi MAX's ZD1211 software offers the usual WiFi config options, including channel, SSID, mode, and broadcast power level. WEP encryption is available in 64, 128, and 256 bit flavors. Securing the connection is a good idea if you live near other people who might want to hijack your internet, and is a rather simple process.
A unique feature incorporated in the WiFi MAX is the option to allow the installation to setup a simple server on the host PC so as to allow a PSP to access video, music, and pictures wirelessly from the host PC. Using a pared down version of Apache HTTP server, the software is able to create a local webpage the PSP can access to download your files. Sadly, media cannot be streamed, but if you've got many more videos and game saves than your memory stick can hold, the file server option greatly simplifies the process of moving files from PC to PSP with just a bit of deletion and downloading. Datel is also nice enough to include their Media Manager software, a rather nice suite that makes encoding video and pictures to PSP-friendly resolutions a simple task.

    In Use
After we installed and configured the WiFi MAX we were ready to get our game on with the PSP and DS. Both systems were able to detect and connect through the device without a hitch, and performed just as well as they would through any other connection WiFi hotspot connection.

The PSP was able to detect the WiFi MAX in a network scan and was good to go. The DS also detected the WiFi MAX as a typical hotspot, meaning it established an entry among the three WiFi Connection entries in the DS Setup screen. As such, it is not quite as seamless a process as that which Nintendo's own WiFi USB connector provides; however, it's not exactly a hassle thanks to the DS' rather efficient automatic detection process. Like the Nintendo USB Connector, the WiFi MAX will only work with PCs, but a software update may be possible in time.
Due to the fact the WiFi Max is only a small dongle and draws power through USB, range is somewhat less than that of a dedicated router with antennas. We were able to get solid connections up to around 60 feet away after positioning the device as high as we could get it with the included USB extension cable and small plastic stand. Another big difference between the WiFi MAX and a true router is the fact that the WiFi MAX is limited to no more than 5 simultaneous connections, whereas a router is more or less unlimited. While this limitation is unlikely to be a problem for most, if you are aiming to have a PSP or DS party you'll likely want to bear it in mind.
    Conclusion
Overall, Datel's WiFi MAX succeeds in its mission of providing plug-and-play WiFi for PSP and DS fans that don't want to hassle with a dedicated router. The only real downside is the fact that with an MSRP of $40 it must compete directly with true WiFi routers that can be found with a little searching for the same price, though the inclusion of Datel's media manager software and simple server setup mitigate this fact. In the end, if you value simplicity and ease of setup and want to start rocking the PSP and DS online, it would be hard to go wrong with the WiFi MAX.
