    Product: Scorpion 3 Light Gun
    Supplier: Success
    Price: US$$16.77
    Reviewer: Axle
    Conclusion:

Its great to simply point a laser beam at your target and shoot, even if it does take some time to set it up to some degree of accuracy. Its a lot easier than 'point and shoot' by any standards. If you resist the urge to plug it in and go and set this up properly then you could have a better hit rate than the terminator.

Lets be honest at this, the US gun laws let anyone have a gun, even a complete loonytoon! Yes you are restricted by how many guns you can have and of course it can only be hand guns but thats the law for you. While you work that one out, and please, answers on a postcard, we will keep your kids entertained with guns for the PC. When I say kids, I mean big kids, like myself and David for example, you know, real juveniles!

It has to be said, there is something so satisfying to the sound of blood splatter in games. Doom was the best for it, remember how gut wrenching that was the first time you heard it ? What about the so called quick on the draw knowing punk reached for it and got to it second!! With the scorpion 3 he can reach for it but YOU have the laser sighting he longs for as his mutilated body drops to the floor and oozes that large stain on the carpet. No Im not a psycho, I just like the tests of speed, and everyone at some point wanted to be the quickest on the draw. Can the Scorpion help that ? Lets find out.

To gun itself for me was to small, I have large hands and had to tuck one finger under the butt of the gun, this meant the cable dragged between my finger as it wrapped around the gun itself. Its not a major problem but after half hour or so I had to put the gun down as it just made my hand ache. The cable is also another point of interest, its simply to short, its under 6' in length and should be far longer than that so you dont sit so close to the TV your playing on. Thats my only realm problems with the unit, except the set up for the laser was a bit to sensitive but more on that in a moment.

To connect the unit you need to take the plug out of the back of the PS2 unit and connect the supplied Gcon unit and plug the yellow cable above into the Gcon. There's your standard USB plug and the standard game controller plug that has to be fitted also. From here your all set to go. If you boot your PS2 without a light gun enabled game in the system it wont work at all, its a safety feature to protect you from playing with the laser. You MUST have an enabled game in the system when you boot. As soon as your game loads you will get the chance to setup the sightings as per normal and you should take time to set up the laser. It took me a good 5-10 minutes and a little swearing to get it accurate enough. There's two dials on the muzzle end of the light gun that you turn to move the laser alignment, its a bit hit and miss because it moves so easily and so far with such a slight turn. Take your time and keep checking it, you can normally find a good 'sweet' spot and you remember to aim slightly high or low etc.

We tested the gun on a variety of games from the local video shop, this gave us a good range of applications for the light gun. It did seem to 'lag' on occasion as you knew the laser was on the target and your finger on the trigger gunning the target down but the tracking on the screen was slightly behind it all. The best example of this was in Dinosaur hunter, three small targets on the screen and a sweep left to right firing multiple shots actually showed on the screen sweeping slower and carried on firing after the trigger was released, even moving! The laser does help you sight up and its a great add on, and one that Im glad to say turns off if you move the gun away from the screen so no one loses an eye. Its all good clean harmless fun and no one gets hurt, shooting at dinosaurs did leave our son slightly worried as hes really into dinosaurs and even names the ones on the screen, hes only 5 !

Everything you need is in the box, the Gcon unit, light gun and some instructions to get you going if you are stuck. It does work, dont get me wrong on it and it was fun but the slight lag on certain games made it frustrating. The smallness of the gun was only a matter of getting used to and that laser certainly helps the quick draw scenario, its worth it for the hours of fun it can give. So as dirty Harry says.....

    'Ok punk, make my day'
